Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport + Transfer to Moshi

Your adventure begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you meet your transfer team for the journey to Moshi. Settle into Chanya Lodge and take time to recover from your flight, with views of the mountain possible when the weather is clear. This first evening gives you a gentle introduction to the town and an opportunity to prepare for the days ahead.

Meet your trekking team for a route briefing and equipment check. Discuss luggage arrangements, the following morning’s departure, dietary requirements and any questions about the climb. Keep essential clothing and medication in your hand luggage, and use the remainder of the day to rest rather than schedule strenuous activities.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 2

Nalemuru Gate - Simba Camp

Travel to Kilimanjaro’s northeastern side and complete registration for the Rongai Route. Begin walking from Nalemuru through cultivated foothills and forest toward Simba Camp. This approach introduces a different side of the mountain, with a quieter feel and views toward the northern landscape when conditions are clear.

Use the first trekking day to establish an easy walking rhythm and become familiar with the camp routine. After arrival, settle into your tent, enjoy a meal and prepare for the higher open slopes ahead. Your guide will discuss the route, clothing and practical details for the next stage while checking how the group has found the first day.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 3

Simba Camp - Second Cave Camp

Continue from Simba Camp up the northern slopes toward Second Cave. The forest gradually gives way to more open heathland, allowing wider views across the landscape. Your guide maintains a measured pace, with breaks to drink, eat and enjoy the change in scenery as you leave the lower slopes behind.

This additional overnight stop spreads the ascent across another day before the route turns toward Mawenzi. Reach Second Cave, settle into camp and use the afternoon to rest. The evening briefing covers the next stage toward Kikilewa and the clothing you will need as temperatures become cooler higher on the mountain.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 4

Second Cave Camp - Kikilewa Camp

Continue across the Rongai slopes toward Kikilewa Camp, moving through open moorland with increasingly expansive mountain scenery. The trail takes you farther from the lower forest and toward the more exposed country beneath Mawenzi. Conditions can shift from strong sunshine to cloud and wind, so adjust layers throughout the walk.

Arrive at camp with time to eat, rest and organise your equipment. Your guide will explain the next stage toward Mawenzi Tarn and review the group’s progress. Take the evening slowly and keep your water and warm layers close at hand as you become accustomed to the colder mountain nights.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 5

Kikilewa Camp - Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Climb toward Mawenzi Tarn as the northern slopes become steeper and the vegetation thins. The dramatic outline of Mawenzi creates a striking setting for the day, with views changing as you gain height. Take regular breaks and let your guide set the pace over the more demanding uphill sections.

The camp near the tarn sits beneath Mawenzi’s rugged peaks and offers a memorable mountain atmosphere. After settling in, rest and prepare for the crossing toward Kibo. Depending on conditions and the group’s progress, your guide may discuss a short nearby acclimatization walk before returning to camp for the evening meal.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 6

Mawenzi Tarn Camp - Kibo Hut

Cross the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, walking through sparse, exposed alpine terrain. The day offers a very different landscape from the forest at the beginning of the climb, with open ground, volcanic features and the summit cone becoming more prominent ahead. Maintain a steady rhythm and keep protection from wind and sun accessible.

Reach the Kibo area and prepare for the overnight summit ascent. Your itinerary lists Kilimanjaro Huts for this stage. Organise your warm clothing, headlamp, water and snacks, then eat and rest. Your guide will explain the ascent toward the crater rim and the decisions that depend on the weather and your condition.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 7

Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut

Set out during the night for the long climb from Kibo toward the crater rim. Your guide leads a slow, controlled ascent over the loose mountain surface, with breaks suited to the conditions. If the team can continue safely, follow the rim toward Uhuru Peak and take in the summit landscape during a brief stop.

Return carefully to Kibo for a rest before descending farther to Horombo Hut. This is a substantial day with both a major ascent and a long descent, so use your energy thoughtfully and keep communicating with your guide. The lower sleeping altitude provides a welcome change after the summit zone.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 8

Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - Moshi

Descend from Horombo through the moorland toward Mandara and the forested lower slopes. The return route makes the mountain’s changes in vegetation especially clear as colder open ground gives way to taller trees and warmer air. Take care on the long descent and use breaks to keep the day comfortable.

At Marangu Gate, complete the park formalities and meet your transfer to Moshi. Settle back into Chanya Lodge, enjoy a shower and an evening away from mountain routines. Your team can help you review the next day’s airport transfer or discuss any onward arrangements you have confirmed.

ArushaDay 9

Departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport

Today brings your itinerary to a close with a transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your team will agree the collection time around your confirmed flight, allowing time for the road journey, check-in and airport formalities. Keep your passport, travel documents, valuables and any medication with you rather than in luggage you cannot easily reach.

If your flight leaves later in the day, discuss how much free time is practical before departure. Any extra excursions, additional meals, day rooms or onward travel arrangements should be agreed separately. Leave with time to reflect on the landscapes and experiences of your Tanzania adventure.
