MoshiDay 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport + Transfer to Moshi

Your adventure begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you meet your transfer team for the journey to Moshi. Settle into Chanya Lodge and take time to recover from your flight, with views of the mountain possible when the weather is clear. This first evening gives you a gentle introduction to the town and an opportunity to prepare for the days ahead.

Meet your trekking team for a route briefing and equipment check. Discuss luggage arrangements, the following morning’s departure, dietary requirements and any questions about the climb. Keep essential clothing and medication in your hand luggage, and use the remainder of the day to rest rather than schedule strenuous activities.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 2

Moshi - Shira 1 Camp

Depart Moshi for the western side of Kilimanjaro and the access arrangements for the Shira approach. After registration and the drive permitted for your selected itinerary, begin the walking section toward your first Shira camp. This shorter Lemosho variant reaches the plateau relatively quickly, making careful pacing particularly important.

Cross the open highland terrain with your guide, watching the vegetation and views change as the route rises. At camp, organise warm layers, drink regularly and allow time to settle into the altitude. Your guide will review your progress and discuss the following day. The exact access and walking arrangements are confirmed during your pre-trek briefing.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 3

Shira 1 Camp - Shira 2 Camp

Spend the day crossing the spacious Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. The more open terrain offers time to appreciate the volcanic landscape and the changing perspective of Kibo. Your guide sets a measured pace, allowing regular breaks and time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing from camp to camp.

This additional stage is one of the benefits of a longer itinerary: it gives you more time on the mountain before the higher sections of the southern circuit. Settle into Shira 2, prepare warmer layers for the evening and discuss the next day’s route. Any short walk after arrival depends on the weather and your guide’s assessment.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 4

Shira 2 Camp - Barranco Camp

Leave the Shira area and follow the southern circuit toward the dramatic valley around Barranco. The route moves through increasingly sparse alpine terrain, with an approach toward the Lava Tower area where included in your selected trail. Walking higher before descending toward camp creates a varied day and an important introduction to the mountain’s upper landscapes.

Take the ascents slowly and allow time for breaks, food and layers as conditions change. The descent toward Barranco brings distinctive vegetation and views of the slopes above the valley. At camp, settle in beneath the Barranco Wall, recover over a warm meal and hear your guide’s plan for the next stage.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 5

Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp

Climb the Barranco Wall with your guide, using a deliberate pace through the rocky sections. The route then traverses the southern side of Kilimanjaro, crossing ridges and valleys before the final approach into Karanga. Clear spells can reveal impressive views of the glaciers and the upper slopes of Kibo.

Staying at Karanga divides the journey to Barafu into more manageable stages and provides another night on the mountain before summit preparations. After reaching camp, eat, rest and organise your equipment. Your guide will review the next day’s shorter approach to Barafu and discuss how the group is adjusting to the increasing altitude.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 6

Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp

Follow the trail from Karanga into the open alpine desert on the approach to Barafu. Vegetation becomes scarce and the path more exposed, so keep warm and waterproof layers accessible even if the morning begins brightly. The team keeps a steady pace that leaves time to settle into camp and prepare for the summit attempt.

At Barafu, pack only the essentials you will carry overnight, check your headlamp and prepare your warmest clothing. Eat and rest before your guide’s final briefing. The timing of the summit departure depends on conditions and the team’s assessment. Your guide will explain the route, breaks and the decisions that may be needed during the ascent.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 7

Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Millenium Camp

Begin the summit ascent during the night, walking slowly up the dark slopes above Barafu. Headlamps mark the trail as your guide sets a controlled rhythm toward the crater rim and, if conditions allow, onward to Uhuru Peak. The cold, altitude and length of the day make patience and communication especially important.

After a brief summit stop when appropriate, descend carefully to Barafu for a rest before continuing down toward Millenium Camp. The lower altitude brings a change in conditions, but the descent is still a substantial part of the day. Follow your guide’s instructions, conserve your energy and remember that continuing upward always depends on the group’s condition and the weather.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 8

Millenium Camp - Mweka Gate - Moshi

Leave the high mountain behind and descend toward Mweka Gate, passing back through changing vegetation and the greener forest zone. The downhill trail can be muddy or slippery, so take care with footing and use a steady pace. The warmer air and thicker vegetation make this a very different walk from the summit slopes.

At the gate, complete park formalities and meet your transfer back to Moshi. Return to Chanya Lodge for a shower, a change of clothes and a comfortable evening after the trek. There is time to thank your mountain team and look back over the journey before preparing for the next day’s departure.

ArushaDay 9

Departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport

Today brings your itinerary to a close with a transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your team will agree the collection time around your confirmed flight, allowing time for the road journey, check-in and airport formalities. Keep your passport, travel documents, valuables and any medication with you rather than in luggage you cannot easily reach.

If your flight leaves later in the day, discuss how much free time is practical before departure. Any extra excursions, additional meals, day rooms or onward travel arrangements should be agreed separately. Leave with time to reflect on the landscapes and experiences of your Tanzania adventure.
