Tour Overview

Climb the traditional Marangu trail with mountain huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo, plus a dedicated acclimatization day based at Horombo.

The ascent and descent follow the same side of Kilimanjaro, allowing you to appreciate the forest, moorland and alpine scenery in both directions. Six mountain days form an eight-day programme, with Chanya Lodge before and after the trek. Hut accommodation still requires warm sleeping equipment.

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport + Transfer to Moshi

Your adventure begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you meet your transfer team for the journey to Moshi. Settle into Chanya Lodge and take time to recover from your flight, with views of the mountain possible when the weather is clear. This first evening gives you a gentle introduction to the town and an opportunity to prepare for the days ahead.

Meet your trekking team for a route briefing and equipment check. Discuss luggage arrangements, the following morning’s departure, dietary requirements and any questions about the climb. Keep essential clothing and medication in your hand luggage, and use the remainder of the day to rest rather than schedule strenuous activities.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 2

Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut

Travel to Marangu Gate for park registration and the start of your forest walk. Follow the trail through dense montane vegetation, with time to notice the changing light, bird calls and forest details around you. Your guide sets an easy rhythm, allowing breaks as you become familiar with the terrain.

Reach Mandara Hut and settle into the shared mountain accommodation listed in your itinerary. If time, weather and your guide’s assessment allow, explore the nearby surroundings before dinner. A warm sleeping bag remains useful in the huts, and the evening briefing will explain the next day’s route and the equipment to keep in your daypack.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 3

Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut

Continue above the rainforest as the trail opens into heath and moorland. The scenery changes noticeably, with lower vegetation, broader views and the mountain’s upper peaks visible when cloud clears. Walk slowly through the rising terrain and allow time for regular breaks.

Arrive at Horombo Hut, organise your sleeping space and enjoy the wide highland setting. On a summit itinerary, this is an important staging point before the higher Kibo area. On a shorter hike, it is a destination in its own right and a chance to experience Kilimanjaro beyond the forest. Your guide will explain the next day’s plans during the evening.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 4

Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut

Remain based at Horombo Hut for an additional day rather than moving immediately to a higher overnight stop. Depending on the weather and how you are feeling, your guide may lead a measured walk into the surrounding moorland before returning to the same hut. There is time to appreciate the scenery and become more familiar with the mountain.

Use the day to rest, check equipment and prepare for the ascent toward Kibo. An acclimatization day adds time to the itinerary, but it does not remove the need to watch for altitude symptoms. Keep your guide informed about your condition and follow the plan that is appropriate for the group.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 5

Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut

Leave Horombo and continue toward Kibo through the increasingly sparse alpine landscape. The trail crosses higher, more exposed ground where the pace becomes slower and warmer layers may be needed even during the day. Your guide will manage breaks and help the group conserve energy for the night ahead.

At Kibo Hut, prepare your summit clothing and daypack, check your headlamp and take time to eat and rest. The overnight climb is the most demanding stage of the route. Listen carefully to the final briefing and discuss any concerns before departure, as the summit plan depends on the weather and the group’s condition.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 6

Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut

Set out during the night for the long climb from Kibo toward the crater rim. Your guide leads a slow, controlled ascent over the loose mountain surface, with breaks suited to the conditions. If the team can continue safely, follow the rim toward Uhuru Peak and take in the summit landscape during a brief stop.

Return carefully to Kibo for a rest before descending farther to Horombo Hut. This is a substantial day with both a major ascent and a long descent, so use your energy thoughtfully and keep communicating with your guide. The lower sleeping altitude provides a welcome change after the summit zone.

Mount KilimanjaroDay 7

Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - Moshi

Descend from Horombo through the moorland toward Mandara and the forested lower slopes. The return route makes the mountain’s changes in vegetation especially clear as colder open ground gives way to taller trees and warmer air. Take care on the long descent and use breaks to keep the day comfortable.

At Marangu Gate, complete the park formalities and meet your transfer to Moshi. Settle back into Chanya Lodge, enjoy a shower and an evening away from mountain routines. Your team can help you review the next day’s airport transfer or discuss any onward arrangements you have confirmed.

ArushaDay 8

Departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport

Today brings your itinerary to a close with a transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your team will agree the collection time around your confirmed flight, allowing time for the road journey, check-in and airport formalities. Keep your passport, travel documents, valuables and any medication with you rather than in luggage you cannot easily reach.

If your flight leaves later in the day, discuss how much free time is practical before departure. Any extra excursions, additional meals, day rooms or onward travel arrangements should be agreed separately. Leave with time to reflect on the landscapes and experiences of your Tanzania adventure.
